Let’s Make a Start

 We moved here to Stickle Tarn in Carmarthenshire July 2014

This is our home a typical welsh farmhouse, we love our home and over the past seven years we have been busy sorting out fencing, setting up growing areas, creating a home for our livestock, now it’s time to sort our home and turn it into a functional dream home that will accommodate our needs for the present day and for the future.

We are now getting damp issues


The house has thick stone walls and damp is seeping through in the kitchen and living room

Air circulation is very poor in the house because the windows only have a small opening at the top, contributing to mould growth.

There is very little storage areas, and the small storage room at the back of the house 
 Was like an ice box and a leaky one that that, many a time we had to put on coats and wellies to venture in there, it was not suitable to store food, and any kitchen utensils stored there would have to be washed before use.

The plan is build a new big kitchen extension boot room and downstairs wet room (thinking of our old age) and a big walk in pantry and a new store room to take the freezers. 



We are also going to build a two storey extension on the other side of the house giving us a lovely big living room with views across our land, at the moment none of our windows give us a view across the land. The upper floor will be a big main bedroom for us.

We had plans drawn up almost 3 years ago, dealt with planning permissions, installed maternity bat boxes to comply after a year of bat surveys 


Now with everything in place we were ready to start, or so we thought, Martin then sustained a shoulder injury and needed an operation, recovery took a long time and had its own problems, then we had COViD and lockdowns now we have come through all that and life started to resemble some sort of normality we can really get started.

The Start Of Chaos

  Before we could even get a spade in the ground we had to sort out a storage area, as the utility room needed to come down first and there was no way I could manage without a washing machine, no room in the house for one, also there was lots of kitchen stuff that I used regularly in that utility room I needed access to. The barn at the side of the house seemed the most obvious place, a corner was cleared out and Sid Martin’s brother built in a storage area  The washing machine also got plumed in there, bit of a bind when the weather is bad and you have run round the outside of the house to put the washing on.,  Of course the stuff that was stored in that corner of the barn had to be housed else where. Lesson Learned

  It all ground to a halt back in Autumn, As I was unwell I really didnt need this added stress, never again will we work with family, it just wasnt coming together, it was costing us a lot of money and the results for that money was not forthcoming.  So we drew a line under it and made some decisions. I found a local building company in the new year, I had passed them several times on the road and was impressed with there work.  A quick chat and exchange of telephone numbers and they started work for us, they have been brilliant. were it all went wrong Progress made with the new team Now we are getting walls  The new builders are great and they are local, easy going, polite, and just get on with the job without distractions.
